Before arriving to Taiwan to study, I had visited the country a few times for tourism. The organization, great manners and kindness of the people left a great impact on me, and I enjoyed myself so much, I thought I could live in this country. After having arrived in Taiwan for my studies, I am glad that I have made this decision. The living cost is affordable, and Taiwan offers any convenience you can think if you know to ask the right people. As such, it is my number one recommendation to get involved with the Taiwanese people!

Of course, we are here to study, so becoming familiar with the university systems is important, but I learned so much more beyond my required classroom courses by attending classes from other departments, other schools and even universities. I also enjoyed looking at syllabi and choosing classes with guest speakers or field trips outside the city to broaden my horizons. Anything that would show me something new.

Of course there are many obligations or societal cues we might miss initially but it is part of the fun in getting to know a new culture to continue learning and exploring. As a student we have the chance of a lifetime because we have the time and energy to travel and see the world. Taiwan has mountains, seas and lakes, open-air baths, bamboo forests, cherry blossom trees, a Chinese culture more traditional than anywhere else that is just within your reach. I believe that “nothing is more expensive than a missed opportunity” (American Author: H. Jackson Brown, Jr.) and so I take advantage of each new day to learn something new about Taiwan.
