History
In recent years, the rapid development of the welfare state in Taiwan, the demand for social work professional has increased dramatically. Soon after the Social Work Act of 1997 was enacted, social work licensure system was established accordingly. In responding to the high demand of social work professional, the Department of Social Work in the National Pingtung University of Science and Technology was established in 2000 and a BSW program was offered. In order to offer students a personalized education and customized to their interests and needs, the Evening and Weekend BSW program was created in 2001. To advance social work education and cultivate social work research skills, a MSW program was established in 2006.

Educational Objectives
Undergraduate Objectives
1. Professionalization: to provide students with the theory and knowledge to help people professionally, in order to elevate student ability in transmitting social services.
2. Comprehensive learning: to make students concerned with minorities in society, social justice, ambition to serve the people, and willing to devote themselves to social work.
3. Internationalization: to provide students with the abilities in multicultural issues and lifelong learning, in order to promote international participation and lifelong learning.

Curricular planning
Curricular planning in the Department has two academic groups of “social work in family, children, and adolescents” and “the elderly, mental and physical disabilities, and long-term care” in the Undergraduate Division. The graduate institute has two academic groups of “care for minority groups” and “social work management.”
