The College of Indigenous Studies distinctively combines indigenous knowledge and concerns with a research-intensive university's scholarly standards and methods to offer transdisciplinary education in a rigorous, respectful academic environment attentive to local, national, and international concerns. In this scholarly and methodological context, the newly approved program (taught in English) emphasizes indigenous studies that reflect the needs of students, the curriculum is designed to explore a wide variety of related topics, including (but not limited to) cultural studies, ethnic histories, environmental sustainability, political economy, multicultural education, and the study of sex/gender issues. The program also offers practical courses through fieldwork, case studies, and service learning so that students can work in close collaboration with indigenous communities and non-profit organizations.
