The Department of Finance, ISU (the Department, previously known as the Department of Financial Management), was established in 1992. The Department subsequently changed to the current name in 1995. The name change and the ensuing curriculum restructuring were motivated by the evolving needs of the financial industry in the wake of ongoing deregulation. The Department first offered a full-time undergraduate program. The full-time master's degree program was later launched in 2003. In an effort to forge international ties, the Department will collaborate with universities in Vietnam to offer overseas master's program in Finance in 2010. The faculty of the Department is scholars with expertise in corporate finance, investment management, banking, economic policy and financial engineering.

As financial institutions evolve, so does the demand for competent professionals in the financial and banking sectors. This trend prompted working professionals to pursue in-depth study in finance in order to enhance their chances of success in the increasingly competitive global financial markets. To address these pressing needs, the Department initiated the four-year undergraduate program of the Division of Continuing Education in 1999 specifically catering to the needs of working professionals, and subsequently the professional finance master's program in 2006.

The Department fully appreciates the permeation of computer technology in the financial industry. To help students cope with the trend, the Department has been investing heavily in acquiring the hardware and software essential to effective learning as well as familiarizing students with the tools to be applied in practice. These efforts culminated in 2006, as the Department built a web-based learning environment to integrate the software and databases installed in the Finance Computing Lab. This platform allows students to access course materials as well as a replay of classroom lectures of their respective instructors wherever the web access is available.
