The Institute has endeavored to promote the interdisciplinary research and education of marine sciences in Taiwan. The faculty and staff are committed to academic excellence and social responsibility by studying and protecting the marine environment, promoting the sustainable utilization of marine resources, and conserving marine ecosystems.
The Institute offers both M.S. and Ph.D. programs, emphasizing on four different areas: physical oceanography, chemical oceanography, marine geology and geophysics, marine biology and fisheries.
The Institute maintains a research vessel, the Ocean Researcher I. The vessel is equipped with advanced navigation equipment and research instruments. The operation is coordinated by experienced administrators, and is further supported by the crew, marine technicians and the vessel’s Regional Instrument Center.

DIVISION INTRODUCTION

Implemented since 1990, the division currently offers core and special courses for M.S. and Ph.D. programs, covering studies in marine biogeochemical cycle, isotopes, diagenesis, environmental pollution, seawater chemistry, etc. Laboratories are equipped with state-of-the-art instruments including atomic adsorption spectrophotometers, ICP emission spectrometer, radioactivity counters, ion and gas chromatographs, autoanalyzer, together with ship-board-operated sampling devices and chemical probes. Faculty members and students of this division have widespread research interests and have participated in many integrated-scale exploration projects during the last decade. The results are fruitful, and have been published in a variety of scientific journals.
