The field of biosciences has migrated from discovering fundamental knowledge to developing applicable biotechnology. As the potential and scope of bio-industry are unprecedentedly far-reaching, bio-industry has been placed among the top priorities of development in many advanced countries and is necessary for enhancing the quality of life. Biotechnology has advanced into an interdisciplinary science and is now applied not only in medical fields but also in aquaculture and farming industries. Hence, we are the era of responsibilities for promoting such knowledge-based industrial economics. DBBS was established in 2015 and is comprised of two institutes (Institute of Biotechnology and Institute of Bioinformatics and Biosignal Transduction) in College of Bioscience and Biotechnology, NCKU. We emphasize on translating fundamental knowledge into biotech products and equip students with capabilities of doing both hard science and cutting-edge technology. With those capabilities, our students are expected to be prophetic leaders of sustainable bio-industries.

Goal of Education
With the academic and industrial resources, DBBS aims to equip students with solid theoretical fundamentals, humanism quality, leadership, industrial foresight, teamwork skills, courage to challenge, and capability of innovation and advancement. With those capabilities, we expect our students to be elite leaders of biotechnology and contribute to global development of bio-industry under the concept that demands drive technical innovation and promote upgrade of bio-industry.

Direction and emphasis of development
Different from common departments of biosciences, DBBS stands out for its integrated and synergistic approach. We focus not only on integrating hard science with industrial application, but also on training students to understand the demands of bio-industry. Specifically, DBBS emphasizes training for background knowledge of nature science, engineering, medical science, and management. We guide students to appreciating the profession of biotechnology and to analyzing demands of bio-industry, which prepare them for integrated biotech research or industry. DBBS is comprised of two scholastic groups: (1) agriculture and aquaculture biotech group and (2) biomedical biotech group. Our teaching and research thus include industrial analysis, management and marketing of biotech innovations, as well as training for integrating academics and industry. Core courses of DBBS cover fields of biosciences, molecular biology, biochemistry, biostatistics, genomics, bioinformatics, bioengineering, biophysical chemistry, industrial analysis, management of biotech innovations, intellectual properties, etc. We believe that the world will be in want of talents fostered in DBBS.
