Introduction
The Department was founded with a Master program on August 1, 1993. The undergraduate program started in 1997 and the Ph.D. program began in 1998. Currently, 197 undergraduates, 90master students, and 42 full- and part-time Ph.D. students are enrolled. The department has also provided, in corporation with the department of Chemistry, a part-time Master degree program in Chemistry and Chemical Engineering for professionals in the chemical industry since 1999.
The faculty of this Department consists of 13 full-time and 6 part-time professors, 1 lecturer, and 2 emeritus professors. Two professors have been granted the NSC Outstanding R&D Personnel Award, and seven professors have earned the NSC General Research Award. The department has been funded by the Ministry of Education in Taiwan to search for ways of improving the chemical engineering education, and outstanding scholars coming from industry, government and universities are invited every year to give lectures to the students in the Chemical Engineering colloquium series.

Research Directions
With many research grants offered by the National Science Council, the Chinese Petroleum Corporation, and the private sectors of the chemical industry, the department concentrates the research and teaching effort in the following areas:
1.The development of catalysis technologies and their applications in the fine chemicals synthesis for the electrochemical and petrochemical industries.
2.The advance in bio-technologies, including fermentation, enzyme reactions, separation and purification of bio-products, and recombination of industrial micro-organisms.
3.The automation of chemical processes, including intelligent process control, robust multivariable process control, process diagnosis and their applications in catalytic distillation column.
4.The synthesis of precision polymers, organic-inorganic hybrids, optoelectronic polymers, and viscoelastic polymeric materials.
5.The studies for the rheology of polymeric fluids, the chaos and process dynamics, and the analysis, simulation, optimization, and control of chemical processes.
6.The advance in nanotechnology and nanomaterials, including carbon nanotubes, metal nanoparticles, nanorods, and their potential applications.
7.The research of material technologies, including the synthesis of fine ceramics, the processing of semi-conductor materials, and the synthesis of chemicals for CMP.
