Department of Mechanical Engineering at National Cheng-Kung University (NCKU) has been established since 1931, and is the oldest and the most renowned mechanical engineering institute in Taiwan. Each year, 150 undergraduate students, 169 master students, and 49 Ph.D. students are enrolled in this department. Currently, this department is consisted of 56 full time faculty members. (39 professors, 10 associate professors and 7 assistant professors), 9 adjunct professors, 600 undergraduates, 346 master students, and 96 Ph.D. students.

The teaching and research programs in this department are organized according to both disciplines and inter-disciplinary themes. We cover all of the core disciplines of mechanical engineering including solid mechanics, thermos-fluid sciences, mechanical design, materials and manufacturing, and system control.

The education program emphasizes on the fundamental scientific theories, technical innovation, and practical training. The research program is focused on both fundamental mechanical sciences and engineering and inter-disciplinary topics to satisfy the needs from industries and societies. For the courses offered, besides the fundamental courses that include thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, dynamics, mechanics of materials, machine design, manufacturing and materials, and automatic control. Other courses related to MEMS, nano-technology, optical and photonic engineering, biomechanics, information and mechatronics, and innovative engineering are also offered in a regular base.
