Founded in 1974, the Graduate Institute of National Development was established to undertake policy-oriented research and instruction related to the study of the nation-state and national development. The Institute seeks to cultivate experts in national development studies and to become one of Taiwan’s leading think tanks. Focusing on the nation-state as the primary unit of analysis, the Institute’s curriculum explores macro-level influences on national development (such as globalization and international and regional factors), while also examining micro-level topics related to contemporary Taiwan, Mainland China, and cross-strait relations.
The Institute currently offers Ph.D., Master’s and Executive Master’s degree programs. Graduate students choose to focus on one of four research fields: Contemporary Taiwan; Mainland China and Cross-Strait Relations; East Asian Culture and Thought or Globalization and Development. The Institute has a comparatively large number of foreign graduate students and strongly welcomes applications from foreign students.
