The Graduate Institute of Photonics at National Sun Yat-sen University (NSYSU) was founded in 1993. The fields of study of the faculty cover laser physics, optical semiconductor materials, organic materials, flat panel display, components and packaging, optical communication, and photonic system and application. The main objectives of the Department include cultivating highly-trained professionals in electro-optical engineering and advancing the research capability of photonic technologies.

The Department of Photonic enjoys high academic standing, and a strong and growing national reputation. In addition to the Top University Development Plan, we have accomplished major national projects, and also joined various large programs, including Five-year NT$50-billion Academic Excellence Program of the Ministry of Education, large academic special technological research programs ,such as the Academic Technological Development Project of the Ministry of Economic Affairs, large academic research programs of Industrial Technology Research Institute, and the R&D program collaborated with enterprises. In recent years, the Department even signed cooperation agreement with the Department of Electrical Engineering of the University of California San diego (UCSD), a famous public university in the United States, providing our faculty members and students with more opportunities to connect with the international academies.

The major research programs of the Department are focused on: (1)Field of photonic materials and components, (2)Field of optical communication and optical information (3)Field of display and alternative energy.

The Department faculty, together with outstanding students and technical support staff, have created an environment that fosters collaboration and pursuit of excellence. We believe that we can set a superior example of intellectual, cultural, and ethnical standard in the long run.
