The Foundation of a Stellar Academic Journey
My decision to study in Taiwan was driven by a search for excellence, and I found it here through world-class academic resources, an excellent mentor, and state-of-the-art research facilities. Living in an environment that is so intentionally international-friendly, while being immersed in the richness of Taiwanese culture, has made this experience deeply meaningful. When I look at my school, National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University (NYCU), three words come to mind: exciting, interesting, and stellar. It is exciting and interesting for the sheer research enthusiasm that permeates the campus, and it is stellar for its location and the prestige of the alumni positions it opens up.

Choosing NYCU was a practical and sustainable choice, largely due to the availability of scholarships and financial aid. However, the university's strong academic reputation was the primary draw. The quality of the courses in my field is rigorous, current, and perfectly structured to build both my theoretical knowledge and practical skills. Knowing that I am learning from a faculty of experts who are actively contributing to their fields gave me immediate confidence in this program. • The university's established industry partnerships gave me confidence that I would graduate with not just a qualification, but real pathways into the professional world — through internships, networking opportunities, and career support.

Bridging the Gap Between Theory and Practice
I have always looked for a program that could bridge the gap between academic theory and real-world application, and the industry connections here have made that possible. The teaching quality of my professors is consistently engaging and intellectually stimulating, encouraging critical thinking rather than passive learning. At NYCU's College of Biomedical Science and Engineering (CBMSE), I have had a unique and transformative learning experience.

The research projects available have allowed me to explore meaningful questions and develop analytical skills that extend well beyond the classroom. I’ve had the opportunity to dive deep into hands-on technical work, including mastering multiomics technologies, animal handling and experiments, cryo sectioning, and neuronal imaging. Beyond the lab, the university organizes various scientific lectures on diverse topics featuring speakers from all over the world, which has broadened my perspective significantly.

Growth Through Support and Service
The support system at NYCU is exceptional; the office staff across all departments are incredibly supportive and helpful, ensuring that the administrative side of student life is seamless. I’ve also had the chance to give back and grow personally by working as a TA for the CBMSE Bilingual Team under the guidance of Dr. Chia-Feng Alvin Lu and Dr. Yu-Chieh Jill Kao. This role was instrumental in helping me improve my communication skills and gain a different perspective on the academic environment.

The bilingual and international dimensions of the program have been a highlight for me. I’ve found that the university provides the tools not just to study, but to thrive in a professional context. For instance, attending talks from various companies about their latest research and technologies helped me distinguish between academic and industrial research, allowing me to identify which path is more suitable for my specific talents and interests.

Mastering the Nuances of Mandarin
Learning Mandarin has been one of my most significant challenges. Mastering the four tones and achieving accurate pronunciation presented an early and persistent difficulty, as even subtle tonal variations can alter meaning entirely. This was a concept quite foreign to me, and alongside the tones, the significant investment of time and memory required to learn Chinese characters felt daunting.

Fortunately, the university provided meaningful support. The structured Mandarin language classes were instrumental in building a solid foundation, offering a guided framework where making mistakes is treated as a natural and necessary part of the learning process. Being paired with native Mandarin speakers allowed me to practise in authentic conversational settings, which helped me gain exposure to natural speech patterns that a formal classroom alone cannot replicate.

A Future Anchored in Taiwan
My study experience in Taiwan has profoundly shaped my post-graduation plans. After careful reflection, I have decided that remaining in Taiwan is not merely a possibility — it is my intended path. Taiwan occupies a unique position at the intersection of Eastern and Western business cultures, and I recognise the professional advantages of being embedded in such a dynamic environment.

The exposure to cross-industry collaboration and globally connected networks has broadened my career horizons in ways I had not fully anticipated when I first arrived. The professional network I have built—the relationships cultivated with peers, faculty, and industry professionals—has laid a meaningful foundation for my future. Immersing myself in this cross-cultural academic and social environment has built the confidence and adaptability I need for a sustainable and fulfilling international career. I arrived with ambitions, but this experience has given those ambitions focus and direction.
