Taiwan emerged as the perfect destination, offering not just an opportunity to immerse myself in Mandarin but also a chance to experience life in Asia.
My journey to Taiwan began with a passion for the Chinese language. I obtained a bachelor’s degree in Chinese language and literature in my home country of Ukraine, and I would like to further my studies in the language. Taiwan emerged as the perfect destination, offering not just an opportunity to immerse myself in Mandarin but also a chance to experience life in Asia. The country's reputation for safety and affordability made it an even more attractive choice.
When it came to selecting a university, Tunghai University stood out for several reasons. I chose to study at Tunghai University because it offers a high-quality education and is renowned for its peaceful environment. Tunghai’s campus is incredibly spacious and beautiful, providing an ideal setting for learning.
I decided to pursue a graduate program in Teaching Chinese as a Second Language, as it aligned perfectly with my academic goals. This program not only allowed me to delve deeper into the language but also equipped me with effective techniques to teach Chinese to Ukrainian students in the future.
While many students might gravitate towards social spaces on campus, my favorite place at Tunghai University is, perhaps surprisingly, the library. It's not just any library—it's a vast, well-equipped study area that offers a serene environment. For me, it serves as an escape from the hustle and bustle of daily life, so I can fully focus on my studies.
Before arriving in Taiwan, I had already spent over three years learning Mandarin. However, living in Taiwan has significantly accelerated my language skills. Taking courses in Mandarin, living in a Mandarin-speaking environment, and communicating with Taiwanese friends daily have all helped me improve my language skills significantly. I'm thrilled to say that I can now easily understand people with different Mandarin accents and express my thoughts fluently in Mandarin.
Fortunately, I haven't faced any major challenges during my time in Taiwan. Of course, there were initial adjustments—from understanding the educational system to navigating banking procedures. However, I've always found support when needed. The Office of International Relations has been particularly helpful, always ready to answer questions and provide explanations. Their assistance has been invaluable in helping me settle into life in Taiwan.
What I appreciate most about studying in Taiwan is the freedom of choice in academia. Unlike universities in Ukraine, Taiwanese institutions allow students to choose their subjects. This flexibility has greatly enhanced my learning experience.
Beyond academics, I love Taiwan for its safety. The sense of security here is remarkable—I feel comfortable walking alone at night or leaving my belongings in public spaces, confident they won't be stolen. This level of safety has allowed me to fully enjoy and explore my new home.
My experience in Taiwan has been transformative. From advancing my language skills to embracing a new culture and educational system, every day brings new learning opportunities. Taiwan has not only met but exceeded my expectations, providing a rich environment for both academic and personal growth.
