History
To meet the demand due to rapid development of the domestic wood industry, a 3-year program was established in August 1975 as the Department of Forest Products when the University was known as National Pingtung Agricultural Institute. In 1991, the school started a 2-year program. In July 1997, the department further started a 4-year Wood Industry BS program and a Wood Industry MS program administered by the Department of Forestry. In 2001, the department resumed and expanded its own MS program. In 2002, the department ended the 2-year program and renamed as Department of Wood Science & Design in 2004.

Mission
The department pursues the sustainable management and utilization of biomaterials. The educational goal of the department is to train the students to be as the Wood Science and Technology professionals, so as to have the capability to design and develop cultural creative forest products with high added values. To fulfill this goal, the department offers the students various fields of study, including fundamentals of wood properties and processing, processing automation, design techniques, and industrial management. Our teaching program emphasizes both fundamentals and practice, providing students with opportunities to practice processing and factory operation skills while attending school.

Curriculum
The department offers three educational programs. The 4-year BS degree program is designed for students from high schools and vocational schools; the 2-year technical training program accepts students overseas; and the MS program accepts students with BS degrees. Courses are designed to achieve the educational missions of the department, combining science with practice. Major fields include physical properties of wood and processing techniques, chemical properties of wood and processing techniques, industrial management, design techniques for forest products and wood-framed housing construction, wood processing automation such as CAD/CAM and expert system.

Teaching facilities and equipment
Having an area of about 3,305 square meters of wood processing "practice factory", the teaching facilities are divided into practical skills assessment, bamboo/wood crafts, planning processing, wood structure examining, and furniture structure examining areas. There are more than 80 related machines and equipment.
There are also over 70 items including research rooms, laboratories and teaching equipment related to wood material basic science, biological material chemical processing, raw materials and energy, wood fiber material chemical modification, wood environment and design, furniture engineering and design, wooden structure engineering design, interior design and acoustics, wood styling arts, exquisite craft design, green building materials development and engineering. In addition, there are teaching research synopsis exhibition, Young Design exhibition, Woodbox exhibition and seminar rooms for students and teachers, and designing classrooms, etc.

Students career possibilities
Furniture, wood crafts, wood-based panels (plywood, particle board, fiberboard, laminated timber, etc.), wood flooring, pulp and paper-making, essence oil extraction, charcoal-making, bio-fuels and other processing and manufacturing, as well as timber trading, wooden building construction and designing, interior decoration design and construction, furniture designing, yacht decorating and repairs, cultural and creative industries and a variety of other creative industries are all potential careers a student in this field can go into. Taking the Gaupu test relating to pigments held by the government is also an option. Engaging in forestry official work, such as the Forestry Bureau, Tourism Bureau, National Parks, Forestry Research Institute, and others. Further education to obtain master's and doctorate degrees in domestic and foreign research institutes relating to designing and wood processing industry is also a viable option.
