History
The department originated from the Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Medicine in the Taiwan Provincial Institute of Agriculture in 1954. In 1965 it was divided into two separate departments. The department of Veterinary Medicine offered four- and six- year college curriculum for senior and junior high school graduates, respectively. From the institute was upgraded to the polytechnic institute in 1991, the department offered two- and five- bachelor’s programs for the junior college and high school graduates, respectively. In 1997 the institute was promoted to the university, and a master’s program was offered in the same year. In 2000 a master’s program for continuing education was offered. In 2001 a doctoral program was added.

Degree programs
1. Five-year bachelor’s program is offered to those who are vocational high school graduates or high school graduates with one year of professional experience.
2. Master’s program is offered to those who have got bachelor’s degree in veterinary medicine or the related fields such as medicine, agriculture, science, pharmacy.
3. Doctoral program is offered to those who have got master’s degree in veterinary medicine or the related fields as the master’s program.
4. Master’s program for continuing education is offered to those who are working as a veterinarian.

Features
The objectives of the department are to enable the student to become acquainted with veterinary knowledge and techniques to prepare for clinical service, to promote healthy conditions for domestic animals, poultry wild animals and aquatics, and to interrelate veterinary medicine and socioeconomic necessity. Veterinary medicine is a combined science in the concepts and methods of modern biomedical technology. In addition to basic knowledge, the program for the veterinary student focuses on applied technology and clinical practice.

Facilities
The total constructed area of the department is about 14,018 m2, including two main teaching buildings and one animal hospital. Besides, one diagnostic center for animal disease, three quarantine stall for quarantine of import animals, two transmission electron microscope, three scanning electron microscopes, one CT scan, and advanced equipment necessary for research or diagnosis in veterinary medicine were also set in this area. According to various areas of research, seventeen research laboratories were established by our staff.

Perspectives
The design and equipment of department building have followed the college of veterinary medicine in United Kingdom and United States. Continual efforts are made to provide the best veterinary clinical training and research, to promote the service function for veterinary medicine and animal husbandry in Taiwan, and to enhance the international cooperation.
