The Department of Japanese Language and Culture offers a diversified program which includes basic language training as well as practical courses. During his first two years, the program focuses on fundamental language training. For junior and senior year students, the department continues to provide language training courses but at the same time, students can have further language skill training with advanced courses such as日本現勢(Current Issues of Japan), 日語資訊處理(Chinese-Japanese word processing), 現代日本應用文, 新聞日文(Journalistic Japanese), 日語口譯(Japanese Interpretation)and翻譯實務(Chinese- Japanese Translation)、商用英文(Business English). These courses allow students to enhance their abilities and provide them with a wide range of career opportunities in the future. In addition, for the students who are interested in pursuing further education, we also provide language courses like日本小說選讀(Contemporary Japanese Fiction), 日本名著選讀(Modern Japanese Literature), 研究方法指導(Guidance to Research Method), 日語語法專題(Special Topics in Japanese Grammar), 語言學概論(Introduction to Linguistics)and日語教學法(Pedagogy of Japanese).

  The Master Program is divided into 4 categories which include "Japanese Language and Linguistic Studies”, "Japanese Literature Studies”, "Japanese Cultural Studies” and "Japanese Language Pedagogy Studies”. Students are encouraged to choose their optional major and minor subject as they wish. During the first year, the courses focus on basic training in language and linguistic studies which covers the training of pronunciation, etymology, vocabulary, grammar, paragraph, honorific and dialect…etc.

  Additionally, through lectures, discussions and presentations on language pedagogy and language acquisition theory, students are able to grasp the quintessence of language studies. As for literature studies, the courses focus on analysis, appreciation, literary quotation, writing and literary theories. In the second year, practical courses such as applied language studies, logico-linguistic analysis, and comparative literature studies are the main focuses of the program. Students will be able to explore the collection and usage of text corpus as well as the principles of inter-language communication in order to learn about the theories and patterns of the language.

  PhD program courses focus on the training of specialists in Japanese language and linguistics and Japanese language pedagogy. Courses such as「日語音聲音韻專題討論」(Special Lecture of Japanese Phonetics and Phonology) 「日語語彙專題討論」「日語教育方法專題討論」(Special Lecture of Language Teaching)「日語教材研究與討論」「日語教育史專題討論」「中日語言對比分析專題討論」are available to students.
