-Master Program in Systems Biology and Bioinformatics

1.Description:
Institute of Systems Biology and Bioinformatics, established in 2006, is the first graduate institute of its kind in Taiwan. Systems biology is an academic field that studies the interrelations and interactions among the parts, such as genes, proteins and metabolites, of a complex biological system. The rationale for a systems-level investigation is that cellular components or pathways work in synergy. A better understanding of the complex system should therefore also look into the interactions between the cellular players. This approach is complementary and parallel to the functional annotations of individual genes and proteins.
The laboratory experiments in systems biology make use of high-throughput technologies including DNA microarrays, chromatin immunoprecipitation on chip, protein microarrays and high-throughput sequencers. The analysis methodologies involve biostatistics, mathematical mode-ling, graph theory and computational simulation, and molecular/cellular biology.
Bioinformatics plays a key role, extracting or integrating useful information from databases of diverse nature ranging from DNA sequences, gene expression, protein structures to biomedical literatures. The goal of systems biology is to transform the traditional descriptive biology into a more quantitative and predictive science. Our institute is young yet has strong faculty and interdisciplinary culture, committing to academic excellence and entrepreneurial success.

The goal of systems biology is to transform the traditional descriptive biology into a more quantitative and predictive science. Our mission is to train students and do research in next generation molecular biology.

3.Teaching Strength:
Our institute has been in close collaborations with hospitals, domestic and overseas, on cutting-edge biomedical and translational research. Systems biology relies on multidisciplinary teamworks involving mathematics, physics, computer science, biology and medicine.
Research projects include biomedical high-throughput genome/proteome experiments and computational bioinformatics.
Our institute is an excellent place for interdisciplinary training for life and computational biomedical sciences. We solicit motivated students to join us. Our graduates are active in academic research and in high-tech industries, both abroad and in Taiwan.
