Introduction

The department aims to meet modern history trend, and to cultivate students to develop a broad and refined mind that “sees the world with Chinese aspiration while living here in Taiwan”. Furthermore, we are expected to cultivate elites with professional modern history knowledge who are able to fully express their own point of view towards history. The PhD program of our department was certified and began the admission in year 2003. The “Chi Nan History Journal” was first published in 1998. Also the Minister of Education has already subsidized the establishment of “Ming Ching Dynasty Living Culture Research Center” and the database of “Ming Ching Dynasty Culture History”. We have already developed educational cooperation projects with Academia Sinica, and National Taiwan University. In the future, we are expected to cooperate with colleges and academic research institutions in Hong Kong, Australia, Japan, and institutions in other Southeast Asia regions. Our specialties include:

1. The overseas Chinese.

2. History of Southern China.

3. Modern Chinese business history.

4. Taiwanese history.

5. Social and cultural History of the Ming-Qing Periods.

Future Plans

1. Working with other collegial departments and academic institutions in Hong Kong, Macau, Southern China, Southeast Asia and Japan for further scholarly cooperation.

2. To set up a database for our research areas. (See our Current Directions.)

3. Advancing ethnological research of Puli’s aboriginal culture and history.

4. To publish e-journal and e-books.





Curricula

1. Undergraduate program

Undergraduate students are required to complete the minimum 130 credits, including:

a. Required courses during the first and the second year: Chinese history and selective readings (16 credits); the history of world civilizations and selective readings (16 credits); introduction to historiography (4 credits); Taiwanese history (6 credits).

b. Optional courses: concentrating on two fields (minimally 9 credits in each field) from the following six fields: Chinese maritime development; overseas Chinese history; social and cultural history of Taiwan; Chinese social and cultural history; Chinese economic history; history of world civilizations.

c. Taking at least one of the six courses in historiography offered by our department (3 credits) during the third or the fourth year.



2. Master’s program

Students are required to take 3 courses in the following: “Workshop in Historical Research and Writing”(3 credits) , “supervised reading and research” (2 credits) , “independent study” (0 credit), and two courses in special topics of his/her area of research. The required credits are 24 in total.



3. Doctoral program

The minimum credits for Ph.D. students are 24. The following courses are required: “historical method and research” (3 credits) and “selected reading in English historical works” (3 credits). In addition, the second foreign language test must be passed before graduation.
