Established in 1974, the Department of Industrial Engineering (IE) at the National Tsing Hua University (NTHU) aims to support the needs for the nation's economic and industrial growth. Due to the increase of industrialization and international competition, the jobs for high-skilled industrial engineers continue to be in high demand. In response, we established Taiwan’s first M.S. program of industrial engineering in 1980, and the Ph.D. program in 1985. Furthermore, given the structure of having multiple programs in one department, an additional program that offers an M.S. degree in Engineering Management was established in 1994. In 1998, this department was renamed as the Department of Industrial Engineering and Engineering Management (IEEM) in response to the revised educational and research focuses. In addition, an Engineering Professional Master Program was established in 2003.

NTHU IEEM is the leading department of industrial engineering and engineering management in Taiwan. Our vision is to become the best department of this subject in Asia. We offer innovative curriculum and excellent learning experiences to cultivate the future elites in academia and industry. Our graduate programs include: Information and Operations Research, e-Business and Operations Management, Ergonomics and Safety Management, Engineering Management, and Health and Medical Care System Management. Under this curriculum design, students have opportunities to study both operational and strategic levels of industrial engineering as well as engineering management.

Now we have 19 full-time faculty members, including 15 professors, 1 associate professors, and 3 assistant professors. We have the largest number of full-time professors and the most diverse research fields in the IE academic field in Taiwan. In the last five years, our teachers have 58 project contracts in average which generate over 40 million NT dollars every year. Our teachers publish about 50 SCI and SSCI papers. In addition, we have accomplished over 10 cases of technology transfers in the last two year.
