The Department of Spanish, around which Wenzao Ursuline University of Languages eventually grew, was founded in August 1966, making it one of the oldest departments of 5-Year Junior College program of Wenzao.

In 1998 the department began its 2-year evening school for those on-job high school graduates. A year later, a 2-year degree conferred program was initiated along with the transform of university college in 1999; then in 2001 a 4-year Evening School of Continuing Education was introduced. Finally, in 2004, the 4-year university-level program was formally established. Currently, there are four different programs in the department, being 4-year undergraduate, 2-year undergraduate, 4-year continuing education leading to bachelor's degree, and 5-year Junior College; with a total number of 900 students, including 700 day-classes students and 200 students in evening school of continuing education.

The academic objective and philosophy of the department is to train people with language skills, cultural and professional knowledge in the fields of diplomatic, commercial, tourism, translation, interpretation, and foreign language teaching. Accordingly, the curricular design has always emphasized the fluency and correctness of the four skills of expression, namely: listening, speaking, reading and writing. Also, our curriculums provide students with the fundamental knowledge of the areas of translation and interpretation between the two languages, in addition to a professional knowledge of Spanish in the fields of political, economic and cultural exchanges. As a result, the main objective is to meet the needs of the demand of our country and the Spanish-speaking countries.

The Department of Spanish has top-notch faculty, most of the teachers graduated with PhDs in linguistics, literature, mass communication, education, history and commerce. Consequently, our department is able to offer a wide range of academic disciplines in order to satisfactorily fulfill the training objectives, the curricular design and the development objectives of the department. Currently, there are 17 full-time faculty members, of whom 4 are native-speaking foreigners.
