Welcome to join us for a visiting study trip! Our research team focuses on plant secondary metabolites (SMs) and their application on agriculture. Unlike primary metabolites which are essential to sustain the life of cells, such as sugars, amino acids and tricarboxylic acids, most of the secondary metabolites are involved in defense reactions and accumulated by plant cells in very small quantities. Secondary metabolites are the end products of primary metabolites such as alkaloids, phenolics, steroids, essential oils, lignins, resins and tannins etc. Interest in SMs was not purely academic but rather was prompted by their great utility as dyes, polymers, fibers, glues, oils, waxes, flavoring agents, perfumes, and drugs. Recognition of the biological properties of myriad SMs has fueled the current focus of this field, namely, the search for new drugs, antibiotics, insecticides, and herbicides. In our laboratory, we have established different systems for inducing the polyploidy of traditional Chinese medicinal plants and showed the increase of their bioactive compounds (SMs). We are also working on induction of phytoalexins in fruits which also belong to SMs and expect to extend their post-harvest storage life. The application of SMs will become one of major topics in the near future.
