Introduction
The major goal of the Department is to integrate advanced biotechnologies into agricultural and related biological sciences, and prepare our students to meet the challenges of future agriculture. The development of the Department is focused on applying modern biotechnologies that modify the traditional agricultural systems to improve the productivity and quality of agricultural products. Besides the basic knowledge in biological processes and improvement of crop and animal production, the faculties in the Department have expertise in molecular biology, modern agricultural sciences and molecular farming. The students are expected to acquire knowledge of molecular biology and biotechnology. Specifically, we emphasize the technologies of gene
manipulation, and the facilities for modern biotechnology are well equipped in the Department. Research on the basic sciences and application of molecular biotechnologies, such as transgenic mouse and plant technologies, are both emphasized in the Department. The ultimate goal of the Department is to lay a solid foundation for the development of advanced agriculture in Taiwan.

Curriculum Planning
The Department offers B.S. M.S. and Ph.D. degrees for students. All undergraduate students are required to complete 128 credits and the core courses offered in the Department include biology, plant physiology, animal physiology, genetics, biochemistry, microbiology, plant breeding, animal reproduction, laboratory animal science, molecular biology, gene manipulation, cell culture, transgenic biotechnology, bioinformatics, and applied genetics. All postgraduate students in M.S. and Ph.D. programs are required to complete 30 and 36 credits, respectively, and the core graduate courses offered in the programs include gene manipulation, nucleotide and protein technology, proteomics, transcriptomics, stem cell research, advanced molecular biology, transgenic technology, epigenetics, gene expression and regulation.
