1. Research Activities
Research efforts in the Institute have focused on the applied analysis of economic problems, management and policy, fishery industry and marketing and international trade issues of concerns to Taiwan. The purpose of management and policy study is to provide data and information to help administrators formulate programs leading to rational management policy and optimum use of resources as well as the development of a viable industry. Research activities for the industry include evaluation of the investment projects and international cooperation and joint ventures. In addition, the Institute has engaged in various marketing research projects such as the analysis of marketing channels, seafood price analysis, market structure of demand and supply, and forecasting of seafood products consumption. Facing with the pressure of globalization and trade liberalization, a series studies concerning the impacts of joining the WTO (World Trade Organization) and APEC (Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation) have been conducted and completed in recent years. The strong commitment to research is manifested by the impressive number of cooperative research grants awarded by government agencies to Institute receives and by the publication of many scholarly works undertaken in the Institute.
 
2. International Activities
The faculty of the Institute actively participates in the international conferences, including the annual meetings of the American Agricultural Economics Association, the Institute of International Fisheries Economics and Trade, the World Aquaculture Society, and the Pacific Economic Cooperation Council. In addition, the Institute sponsors international conferences and workshops in Taiwan. For instance, the Institute organized an international conference entitled "International Cooperation for Fisheries and Aquaculture Development" in Taiwan, July 18-21, 1994; and hosted the 9th annual meeting Fisheries Working Group of APEC in Taipei in June 1998.
In 2001, the Institute organized the International Workshop on Fishery Policy and Management for the South-Pacific Region in Keelung held during July 10-24 and the International Workshop on Fishery Management and Seafood Trade Development held in Keelung on July 12. In 2002, the Institute organized the International Workshop on Sustainable Management of Tropical and Subtropical Fisheries during 15-31 July, the International Conference on Sustainable Management of Tropical and Subtropical Fisheries on 18 July, and an International Conference on Bluefin Tuna and Cobia Cage Farming on 14 November. Taking the advantage the opportunity of Taiwan hosting the Stock Assessment Group (SAG) and Scientific Committee (SC) Meeting for the Commission for the Conservation of Southern Bluefin Tuna (CCSBT) international meeting from August 29 to September 8, the Institute invited several top international marine resource scientists who are on the Advisory Panel of CCSBT as speakers in a one day workshop, “International Workshop on Southern Bluefin Tuna Resource Management and International Perspective of Fisheries Management and Conservation,” held on August 28, 2005 in National Taiwan Ocean University.
