Introduction to NTUA

The university was originally established as the National School of Arts on October 31, 1955. In 1960, it was reorganized as the National Taiwan Academy of Arts, and in August 1994, it was upgraded to the National Taiwan Institute of Arts. On August 1, 2001, it was officially renamed National Taiwan University of Arts. At the school's founding ceremony, then-Minister of Education Mr. Chang Chi-yun expressed his high hopes for the institution, describing it as a fertile ground for the renaissance of Chinese arts. Over the years, the university has shouldered the historical mission of carrying forward artistic traditions while embracing innovation, upholding the principles of active creativity and the pursuit of excellence. As it has continuously evolved and thrived through the changing tides of time, the university has remained committed to cultivating artistic talent. Following the completion of a university-wide departmental integration in the 2007 academic year, the institution has fully matured into a comprehensive arts university.

The development of NTUA over the past half-century is tantamount to writing a modern history of Taiwanese art. As the oldest and most specialized higher education institution in the arts in Taiwan, NTUA stands as a vital hub for the nation’s artistic education. During its early years, when the university was still forging its path, many renowned masters of contemporary art—such as Li Mei-shu, Liao Chi-chun, Li Shih-chiao, Li Tse-fan, Hung Jui-lin, Fu Juan-fu, Yang Ying-feng, Huang Kui-li, Lin Pao-chia, Yao Yi-wei, Teng Chang-kuo, Hsiao Tzu, and Li Tien-ming—dedicated themselves to teaching here. Their contributions not only helped shape a comprehensive artistic environment for society but also nurtured countless outstanding talents who have gone on to shine in the world of art.

The list of outstanding alumni from NTUA is virtually endless. Notable figures include Academy Award-winning directors Ang Lee (78th and 85th Academy Awards) and Hou Hsiao-hsien, as well as renowned filmmakers Wang Tung, Ma Shui-long, Chu Chong-ching, Chien Wen-pin, Chen Cheng-hsiung, Tsai Erh-ping, and Kuo Cheng-feng. These distinguished directors, musicians, artists, and designers have not only brought great honor to their alma mater but also serve as a testament to the university’s remarkable achievements in arts education.
