Wenzao Ursuline University of Languages was founded by the sisters of the Roman Union of the Order of St. Ursula in 1966. It was named in honor of Wenzao Lo, the first Chinese Bishop. Wenzao is known for its commitment to excellence in foreign languages teaching and research.

With its motto, “Revere the divine, love the human.” Sharing with that of all Ursuline schools, “Serviam” (I will serve), Wenzao hopes to develop students spiritually as well as to prepare them for success in this highly demanding and competitive world. The University expects all Wenzaorians to acquire competent knowledge and useful skills inspired by Life, Language, and Leadership.

The University has established and maintains pleasant and collaborative relations with 173 universities and institutions from 21 countries in Asia, America, Europe and Australia. Collaboration between Wenzao and the foreign universities and institutions covers various areas such as exchange of students and faculty, study visits, and research teaching collaboration.

To enhance the employability of our students, Wenzao offers them career consultations and a digitized course map to help them choose suitable courses for their future careers as well as to develop their abilities , interests and experiences. Collaboration with industry is also emphasized so as to provide opportunities of internship for the students and to bridge the gap between the academe and the world of reality.

The Campus:

The campus of Wenzao is situated in Kaohsiung, a thriving harbor city in the south of Taiwan and a great place to live, work and study in. The buildings on campus are rich in their architectural styles, from the Chinese Palace style of Zhengqui Hall and the Tang Dynasty college style of Mingyuan to the Noah’s Ark shape of Yumei Gymnasium and the high-rise modern style of Zhishan Hall. Visitors to our campus are impressed by the humanistic and historic aspects of our college.

Featured Centers:

*Language Diagnostic and Consulting Center (LDCC)

This center employs experienced language teachers as Dr. E-Learning to diagnose students’ language learning styles and strategies, and then produce a doctor’s prescription of a tailor-made study plan to meet individual needs. The LDCC also keeps an individual digital portfolio to record the students’ learning progress for future modificaiton.

*European(EU) Center

The EU Center aims at introducing European cultures, facilitating EU/European studies and enhancing the collaboration with European academic institutions. Its Overseas Study Information Office is a window to European education.

*English Teaching / Learning Resources Center in Southern Taiwan

This center was commissioned by the ROC Ministry of Education in 2005, in the hope of upgrading the quality of English teaching and learning among the colleges in southern Taiwan. Our college with its rich experience in English teaching and research hosts this center.

*International Conference Center

This center occupies the 12nd floor to the 16th floor of Zhishan Hall. It includes reception desk, press room, exhibition area and 9 seminar rooms. The 15th floor features the Cardinal Shan International Conference Hall, which can accommodate 200 persons and is equipped with five interpreting booths and the newest interpreting facilities to meet the possibility of interpreting in 5 languages simultaneously.

Student dormitory measures about 14,400 square meters to house 736 students. Each room is air-conditioned and equipped with 4 beds, 4 desks, 4 closets, and a private bath to be shared by four students. There is a common recreation area and two utility rooms where you can find a drinking fountain, a spin dryer, and cleaning utensils on both ends of the hall on every floor. The laundry room is equipped with washing machines and tumble dryers are located at the basement. If you borrow beddings and linens from the dorm, you have to pay NTD300 for a laundry service. Meals are served in the student cafeteria at the dorm. All dormitory residents are required to purchase meal tickets amounted to NTD3000 unless a waiving commitment has been made.

From First National Freeway
﹡Southward: Take Dingjin Interchange towards Tzuoying (right lane), and exit at 362 KM.

Then Go to Dachung Road, go past Veterans General Hospital-Kaohsiung, and turn left to Mintzu Road. Go south for about 1 kilometer and the College is on the left.

The Office of International & Cross-strait Cooperation (OICC), formerly known as Section of Academic Exchange, handles all the international exchange activities and cooperation programs with our overseas sister universities and colleges. Currently, we have 173 educational partners from 21 countries across the world—UK, USA, Chile, Africa, Panama, Spain, Germany, France, Belgium, Czech Republic, Poland, Japan, Korea, Vietnam, Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, Australia, New Zealand, China and Taiwan.

Every year, we receive exchange students from our sister schools, and the number is increasing year by year. The application deadlines every year are June 30 for Fall semester and December 31 for Spring semester while some exceptions may be accepted by special request. This office is glad to assist our international students in the following issues:
(1) applying for admission
(2) providing scholarship information
(3) finding International Student Assistants (ISAs) to help accommodate to the lives here in Taiwan
(4) providing information to apply for official documents (visa extension/resident visa/Alien Resident Certificate)
(5) other related issues

International students from our sister schools who apply to study as exchange students at Wenzao need to be nominated by their host schools. The application materials must be sent to our office by the above mentioned deadlines. Once our office review and approve the documents, we will process the admission letters duly and sent to the applicants for their visa application.

The Chinese Language Center at Wenzao was established in September 2002 to improve inter-cultural communication between Chinese and other cultures. We offer Chinese language courses at various levels from Beginner through Advanced as well as elective culture courses such as Calligraphy, and Taichi Kungfu, etc. Also available are short-term courses designed for junior high, senior high school and college students during the summer/winter vacations and special courses for certain groups of students. A distinctive feature of our Center is the free one-on-one tutoring class for all the registered foreign students, provided by students from the Department of Applied Chinese in cooperation with the Chinese Language Center.

Accommodation in the student dormitory is currently unavailable. Upon request, we will assist newly arrived students with their lodging arrangements.

Location & Facilities

Wenzao is located in the beautiful harbor city of Kaohsiung, near the High-Speed Rail station Zuoying. The school has a library and an audio-visual center with multi-language collections available to all the students. The Chinese Language Center has digitalized classrooms and a language lab with self-guided learning materials. Wireless service is available on campus.

Local Attractions

The Kaohsiung Arena, Lotus Lake, Heart of Love River, the National Sports Park, the Confucian Temple, night markets and department stores are all near the school.
