Soochow University was established by Missionaries of the Methodist Church in 1900 at Suzhou (formerly spelled Soochow), making it China’s first western-style university. Re-established in Taiwan in 1951, it became the first private university on the island. To live up to its motto, “Unto a full grown man,” Soochow University strives to provide quality teaching, and is determined to do its absolute best to produce mature graduates with creative and practical abilities.

Soochow University now comprises five graduate schools, offering 22 masters and 6 doctoral programs, as well as 22 departments for undergraduates. The current enrollment is over 16,000. In recent years, the University initiated a ceremony which aims at making college freshmen aware that upon entering university they have become and therefore must behave as adults. In addition, the school encourages many student club activities in order to develop the students’ sense of responsibility and social skills.

Based on solid teaching and research, Soochow University has developed distinctive brand programs, and set up teaching and learning platform in order to share, accumulate, and extend our resources. The general education emphasizes on the development of the whole person, reflecting the university’s traditions and general trend in higher education.
