Academic Information

NTHU is a world-class research university with ~650 tenure-track faculty and ~1200 students.

Among its faculty, there are five winners and Presidential Science Prize, 18 numbers of the Academia Sinica, 33 National chairs of the Ministry of Education. The quality or per-capita academic performance of NTHU faculty is the best in Taiwan. The 2012 October issue of the Traditional Chinese Edition of Scientific American listed ten breakthroughs beyond the limits of science by Taiwanese researchers in the part decade. Five out of these breakthroughs, e.g. plasmonic nanolaser, “big bang” tomography, the radio-over-fiber communication, 3D brain imaging and the proton pump were contributed by NTHU faculty and students. Papers published by the NTHU community were cited 6.1 times per paper in 2010-2014 (source: InCites ESI). Citations per faculty per paper of NTHU have been the highest of Taiwan in the past decade. NTHU baseline for category normalized citation impact (CNCI) in 2001-2014 was 1.16, significantly higher than that of the global baseline (CNCI=0.969).

NTHU is 155th in the QS World University Rankings of the universities ranked higher, only 10 are of similar faculty size (1000 or less). Sixteen of NTHU’s disciplines are worldly-ranked in the 2015 QS World University Rankings by Subjects. All fields of Sciences, i.e. Physics & Astronomy、Chemistry、Mathematics、Biological Sciences、Materials Science、Environmental Sciences are ranked in the top 200 or higher, as are all the subjects of Engineering and Engineering & Technology, i.e. Mechanical, Aeronautical & Manufacturing、Electrical & Electronic、Computer Science & Information Systems as well as Chemical Engineering. According to the National Academy of Inventors (U.S.), NTHU ranked 11th globally in the number of U.S. patents granted to academic institutions world-wide in 2014. The technology transfer income of NTHU rapidly grew from 20M NTD in 2010 to over 100M in 2015 (1US$:30NT$). For example, Gogolook, which developed the popular App, WhosCall, was recently acquired by LINE for 0.53 billion NTD. NTHU also established joint research centers with flagship enterprises such as TSMC、MediaTek、HIWIN Industries、LITEON and Unimicron. These companies committed to invest ~70M NTD yearly for joint research and development with NTHU.
