Building a Strong Foundation through an Equal Emphasis on Education and Research

In 1961, the Feng Chia College of Engineering and Business was established on Guanyin Mountain in Beitun District of Taichung City. Two years later it was moved to its present location in Xitun District. University status was granted in 1980 and the name changed to Feng Chia University (FCU). For over 50 years, FCU has steadily increased in size and scope. Currently, it is comprised of eight schools and colleges: the School of Management Development, and the colleges of Engineering, Business, Sciences, Humanities and Social Sciences, Information and Electrical Engineering, Construction and Development, and Finance. There are 33 academic departments (excluding undeclared honors programs), four independent graduate institutes and three independent doctoral programs. In total, FCU offers 57 Bachelor’s, 76 Master’s and 14 doctoral degree programs. Over 20,000 students are currently enrolled in undergraduate, Master’s degree, doctoral degree and Master’s degree programs for working professionals. There are 2,200 faculty and administrative staff and over 160,000 alumni. Since 2008, surveys of executives from Taiwan’s top 1,000 enterprises have consistently ranked FCU in the top 10 for the quality of its graduates.

The long-term vision for FCU is to establish itself as a prestigious Asia Pacific university characterized by excellence in education and breakthrough research. FCU, furthermore, strives to cultivate the next generation of leaders by maintaining a broad world-view and equipping students with professional knowledge and skills, and an appreciation for the arts and humanities.

Between 2005 and 2013, FCU was consistently awarded substantial grants for its excellence in teaching and learning projects. For five of those years, FCU received the largest grants for excellence in teaching and learning projects of any university in Taiwan. In addition, all 17 engineering-related academic departments have received IEET accreditation. In 2012, FCU became the only comprehensive university in Taiwan to receive a 100% passage rate for all Ministry of Education-evaluated administrative units, academic departments and graduate institutes. It is also the only comprehensive university in Taiwan with the distinction of receiving a Ministry of Education commendation for excellence in administrative affairs.

FCU research papers in the fields of engineering, materials science and engineering and computer science have been included among the top 1% of published research papers in the Essential Science Indicators (ESI) database. In 2008, the APEC Research Center for Advanced Biohydrogen Technology was established on the FCU campus. In 2009, the Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC) designated the Geographic Information Systems Research Center as the first Asian standards testing center, as well as one of 20 official principal members. FCU has also had great success in terms of industry-academia collaborations and has completed research and development on a number of commercial products, as well as actively encourages faculty and students to set up their own businesses. Through its patent licensing and technology transfer programs, FCU has created many business opportunities. It is also only the third university in Taiwan to complete and receive marks of excellence on five National Science Council technology transfer projects.

In 2012, FCU was ranked among the top 100 global “emerging” universities in a survey published in the UK’s The Times Higher Education Supplement. This survey was based on 13 performance indicators, including academic prestige, educational quality, research projects, internationalization efforts and industry-academia collaborations. In 2013, FCU was listed among Asia’s top 100 universities by the same publication in its inaugural Asia University Rankings.

Incorporating Green Concepts and Sustainability to Create a Blueprint for the Future

FCU has a history of more than half a century. Over the next 50 years, an environmentally friendly, green campus will be constructed. In the design of its new Shuinan campus, sustainability concepts will be incorporated to complement the development of the Taichung Gateway District and College Town. The goal is to become a campus with low carbon emissions, thereby fulfilling FCU’s environmental and conservation responsibilities.

In the contemporary era of high technology and knowledge-based economy, the acquiring and applying of knowledge should be specialized, diversified, and multi-functional. The University therefore has directed its construction toward renovating campus environment and facilities to cater for an e-learning era. The initiation of campus-wide wireless internet access, digital library RFID system and Blackboard e-learning system are part of the examples. In addition to the construction of the multi-functional gymnasium, the new spirit of vitality is also seen in the establishment of many new innovative institutes, such as the Geographical Information System Research Center, the Construction Research Center, the Business Incubation Center, the Office of Technology Licensing, the E-Commerce Research Center, the Nano-Technology Research Center and the Green Energy Development Center.

Getting Here

By Bus:

You will normally arrive at Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport in Taoyuan, 43 kilometers southwest of the capital, Taipei and a 2-hour bus ride to Taichung.

Once you have decided to take a bus straight to Taichung, turn left upon entering the arrival hall of Terminal 1, after having passed through the customs inspection. At the end of the hall you will find many ticket windows selling bus tickets to various destinations. If you arrive in Terminal 2, you will find the long-distance buses when you turn right and walk all the way down. Purchase a ticket to Chao Ma (it is the stop closest to our University, so it will save you onsiderably on cab fare). Once you have purchased your bus ticket, proceed to the exit to the left of the ticket booth and head for the last bus stop on the right. The one on the corner, is the one for Taichung. If you are unsure, just ask the representatives. Tickets often have the departure time and seat number marked, so you will have to check what time your bus leaves, since it won’t necessarily be the next one. The trip takes about 2-3 hours, depending on the traffic conditions. Show your ticket to the representatives and they will be happy to escort you.

When boarding the bus, ask the driver to tell you when to get off, because some of them will shout the name of the station they are approaching, while others don’t bother telling whether and where they are about to stop. Be sure to keep the ticket stub, because you may have to hand it back to the driver when you get off the bus.

The most convenient way to get to Feng Chia University from the Chao Ma bus stop is taking a cab, especially when you have lots of luggage with you. You should pay between NT$ 100 and 150 for the ride to the University, depending on the traffic conditions.

By Car:

Another option is to take a taxi from the airport to the University, but this is, of course, the most expensive. On average, such a ride will cost you minimum NT$ 2,500.
