Recently we are working on five axis CNC machine tool which has been extensively popular because of its ability to machine free form surface efficiently. Its two additional rotary axes can be considered in use to adjust the orientation of tool with respect to the work piece. The associated benefits include better tool accessibility, much higher material removal rates with improved surface quality, less work piece set up time and significantly lower production costs. However, these rotary axes are also dominant sources of the geometric errors. These errors majorly relate to the structure of the machine tool and often inherent in the manufacturing of the machine’s structural components. This will be great opportunity for interns as they will able to know how to analyze the geometric error sources and establish the error motion equations on five-axis CNC machine tools. It will be helpful for them to learn geometric error models of the five axis machine tool and verify the validity of this model by using homogeneous transformation matrix (HTM). Basically, if new interns come to join or visit our lab, they will not only learn the measurement method for the analysis of location errors of the five-axis CNC machine tool but also get knowledge about how to use measurement equipment such as laser interferometer, touch probes and coordinate measurement machines. Moreover, they will learn and be expert in precise measuring on machine tools.
