Our mission is to provide quality graduate education and perform cutting edge research in environmental and occupational health science, which addresses all human health concerns related to the natural and built environment, and the occupation. Major research areas include exposure science, toxicology, epidemiology, and occupational medicine.
The department is structured into 4 distinct divisions: Industrial Hygiene and Environmental Exposure Assessment, Environmental Toxicology and Chemical Analysis, Epidemiology, and Occupational and Environmental Medicine. The program of Industrial Hygiene and Environmental Exposure Assessment is focused on identifying potential hazardous exposure in the environment and workplace, analyzing chemical components, assessing the effects on health-related indices, and initiating control strategies. Environmental Toxicology and Chemical Analysis division aims to investigate cellular and molecular mechanisms that underlie individual’s susceptibility to toxic agents and carcinogenesis. Epidemiology division conducts research in biostatistics, searching for genetic and environmental risk factors influencing disease susceptibility, and determining the joint effects of individual risk variants and their interactions on disease risk. The Occupational and Environmental Medicine program is designed to conduct evidence based research on the practice of occupational medicine.
