National Chiao Tung University

Hi Project

National Chiao Tung University is a leading science and technology research university. It comprises 10 colleges and a School of Law offering undergraduate and higher degree programs in Biological Science and Technology, Computer Science, Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Hakka Studies, Humanities and Social Sciences, Law, Management, Photonics, and Science.

National Chiao Tung University was originally founded in Shanghai in 1896 as Nanyang College, an origin it shares with four universities in mainland China (Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Beijing Jiaotong University in, Xi’an Jiaotong University, and Southwest Jiaotong University in Chengdu). Taiwan’s National Chiao Tung University (NCTU) was established in Hsinchu in Taiwan in 1958.

For the past two years, the university has been crafting a 10-year blueprint that focuses on new directions that will make a greater contribution to the well-being of humanity. These include integrating engineering, medicine, and life sciences to effectively explore and deploy biomedical technologies, and developing green energy to address environmental imperatives.

NCTU is close to Hsinchu Science Park – nicknamed Taiwan’s “Silicon Valley” – and it provides students with an excellent learning and research environment, a beautiful state-of-the-art library, and the best available research facilities. It also boasts one of the most picturesque campuses in Taiwan, with delightful gardens and marvelous sculptures. NCTU is a member of the University System of Taiwan and NCTU students can also take courses at National Central University, National Tsing Hua University, and National Yang-Ming University.

1. This research-oriented university has 5,296 undergraduate students, and 7,762 students studying for a master’s degree or a doctorate.
2. Over 1,500 international students from over 60 countries, 80% of whom receive a scholarship or some form of financial assistance.

Facility and Staff – in 2014

1. 716 teaching and research faculty
2. 286 research staff
3. The university in Taiwan with the highest number of faculty members who are IEEE fellows

Advanced Research Centers
NCTU has 8 advanced research centers that were established to promote and coordinate international and interdisciplinary academic research in their field. It already enjoys world-renown in the computer science, information engineering, and photonics fields.

Biomedical Electronics Translational Research Center (BETRC)
Brain Research Center (BRC)
Center for Bioinformatics Research (CBR)
Center for Interdisciplinary Science (CIS)
Disaster Prevention and Water Environment Research Center (DPWE)
Frontier Photonics Research Center (FPC)
Intelligent Information Communications Research Center (I2CRC)
Nanoelectronics and Infortronic Systems Research Center (NISRC)

The research groups are constantly augmenting each center’s contributions in the expanding fields of interdisciplinary research. Their innovative and groundbreaking research projects receive funding from the Ministry of Education.

Research Resources
Seven of Taiwan’s ten national-level research laboratories under National Applied Research Laboratories (NARL) are located in close proximity to NCTU.

Instrument Technology Research Center (ITRC) – NAR Labs
National Center for High-performance Computing (NCHC)
National Chip Implementation Center (CIC)
National Measurement Laboratory (NML)
National Nano Device Laboratories (NDL)
National Space Organization (NSPO)
National Synchrotron Radiation Research Center (NSRRC)

This offers NCTU students opportunities to participate in cutting edge technology experiments, and undertake practical training and internships with these world-class research bodies.

Culture of Innovation and Entrepreneurship
NCTU encourages innovation. The NCTU Innovation and Incubation Center provides legal and management consultation services to young entrepreneurs. Our creative students constantly generate innovative business ideas.

Among the universities in Taiwan with the highest number of patents granted
188 patents filed and 320 granted in 2014
Revenue from technology licensing among the highest in Taiwan
105 technology transfers in 2014
2,687 patents filed, 1,461 granted, and 785 technology transfers by 2014
133 projects were incubated by 2014

Outstanding Alumni
The university has a strong network of outstanding alumni. Nearly two-thirds of the CEOs and general managers in Hsinchu Science Park are NCTU alumni.

NCTU was awarded a Ministry of Education Prize of Excellence for Campus Internationalization in 2014.
NCTU has an increasingly internationalized campus, for example: 1) campus documents, posters, maps, signs, and labels are now all dual language: in both Chinese and English; 2) the university provides kitchen facilities in dorms, so international students can prepare the foods they prefer; 3) a Muslim prayer place, a masjid, is provided on campus; 4) all colleges offer EMI (English as the medium of instruction) courses 5) free Chinese language courses are available for international students
As a part of its commitment to internationalization, the University is expanding its partnerships with leading and prestigious academic and research institutes around the world to establish student exchange programs, dual degree programs, and research and practical training or internships, and similar partnerships with leading industries and companies to establish opportunities for students to undertake research and practical training or internships with them.
