Compulsory Education Since 1968, students in Taiwan have had 9 years of compulsory education, comprised of 6 years of elementary school and 3 years of junior high school. Students usually start first grade at age six. At the end of junior high school, students take another set of exams to qualify for different senior high and vocational schools.
